[edit] Summary

Ran has a nightmare about her mother dying and starts to regain specific memories about the event. Meanwhile, people who have some relation to "The Great" Kogoro Mouri have been attacked. All of the victims' names correspond to a playing card. These people were targeted in order, from King down to Ace. The police conclude that the attacker wants revenge on Kogori, but as these injuries become murders, Conan realizes that it is a race to predict who the next victim will be. He soon discoverers something quite different from what the police suspected, while learning about an incident from 10 years ago.

[edit] Card Symbols

During the course of the film multiple characters are represented by a certain number and a playing cards (in a standard deck). The playing cards are all spades, the suit that represents death. The victim's name, clue left behind, and the connection with the number are all displayed below in the chart. Since the English adaption has changed names of the characters, the corresponding relationships between the character and the numbers were changed accordingly.

[edit] Plot

[edit] The Dream

Ancient Roman Building

The movie opens with a dream in which Ran seemed to be in a ancient roman building. She walks up a flight of stone stairs overlooking a lake and sees her mother Eri Kisaki get shot. This is later revealed to be a suppressed memory of when her mother was shot by her father when she was taken as a hostage. She believes that is why her parents separated 10 years ago. The Moores, Eri, and Conan go out to eat dinner at a french restaurant called "Le Fleur", and meet up with an old acquaintance of the family. He is a wine taster, one of the best in the world.

The next day Inspector Megure is jogging in the park, when suddenly he is attacked with a crossbow. Near where the incident occurred, a strange looking knife is found. Conan thinks he has seen this knife somewhere before. It is revealed that this "knife" is made from paper mache. This injures him and places him in the Midori-dai Police Hospital. Kogoro, Conan, and Ran then go visit Megure, and Megure refuses to remove his hat (this is a running gag in the series). This is where Conan learns Megure's first name, Joseph. Once they leave, Eri Kisaki receives a box of expensive swiss chocolates delivered to her by her secretary Kuriyama. She mistakenly believes they were sent by Kogoro who sent the same kind of chocolates when they were much younger (this leads to the assumption that it is someone who knew or overheard them during that time), and eats them. She then falls out of her chair then passes out. It is discovered that the chocolates were poisoned. Megure, still recovering, joins the rest of the group in Eri's room at Tohto University Hospital. Attached to her favorite brand of chocolate was a paper mache flower. Once again, Conan finds the clue familiar. It seems the crimes are connected.

The next day Dr. Agasa is attacked with a crossbow, by a motorist and Conan gives chase. Eventually the motorist gets away. Conan finds the clue the motorist left behind. This time, it is a paper mache scepter. He concludes all the "clues" are from a standard deck of regular playing cards. They are each the items a "face card" is holding. The king is holding a knife, the queen a flower, and the Jack a scepter. Each victim is represented by a regular playing card. The order of the attacks starts from the highest card (King of Spade) and goes down in order. Inspector Santos assuringly makes the claim that the cards hold a deeper meaning to the cards according to what it corresponds to (spades, diamond, jack, clubs, etc.) Victims of face cards "clues" are objects that are being held in the playing card. Victims of non-face cards are represented by the playing card itself. It is later revealed during Kogoro's "sleeping deductions" that Shinichi Kudo is the Ace of Spades.

Inspector Megure, and Mori Kogoro believes the killer/attacker is a card dealer turned criminal they both helped to arrest in the past called Jake Morado. They believe that he wants revenge against the two, and to kill all of Kogoro's friends and acquaintances. He mistakenly believes the next victim (number 10) is an acquaintance he knows from a bar called "Towako". He looks for Tammy Diez. The police surround the building at sundown and guard it all night while Kogoro hides behind a column guarding the emergency exit. While Conan and Ran are riding with Detective Santos, Ran mentions a past event mentioned by Inspector Megure while in the hospital. Santos figures they'll find out eventually and so he starts explaining a time when Kogoro was still Lead Inspector and Megure was Assistant Inspector. While running through an alley Kogoro catches Morano and performs a Judo move to take him down just as Megure comes in last minute to help assist in the arrest. Morano while in custody gave a full statement, and when finished gave the excuse of exhaustion so a cop lead him to the restroom. While waiting Santos explains Eri, and 7 year old Ran arrive to give Kogoro a change of clothes from the work he's done. Morano bursts out of the restroom while holding the gun from the cop he overpowered and proceeds to take hostage his wife Eri Kisaki desperate for an exit. Ran starts to piece together her dream with the incident, assuming Eri left him for that reason, and doubts Kogoro's intention until later. Santos then goes on and gives his ideas on the situation, and goes on saying why he quit the force. Charges were brought up against him, and rather than go through an investigation he resigned his position.

The Accident

Conan helps the police realize that she may not be the 10th target, because another of Kogoro's friend Hiroki Tsuji (the Pro Golfer) is ranked 10th best golfer in the world. The police decide to split into two teams. Half stay with the women from the bar, and Megure, Conan, Ran, Kogoro, and a few police officers go to protect the golfer where his helicopter is stationed (Excel Air Service). Tsuji has been planning on flying his helicopter for weeks, and refuses to cancel his flight. So Kogoro hesitantly joins, and so does Megure decide to ride with him in order to protect him (and Conan sneaks aboard). As they take off with him he puts eye drops in his eyes for his allergies. The killer replaced Atropine Eye Drops with the victim's allergy eye drops. This dilated his eyes, made him very sensitive to sunlight, and eventually unable to fly the helicopter. As they spiral out of control, Conan takes control and looks for a clear area that can hold a larger object along with incoming debris. His quick thinking saves their lives. He contacts Georges Detective Boys badge he where he instructs them to clear the area. He helps make a safe crash landing in his schoolyard where George, Ayumi, and Mitsuhiko coincidentally were playing soccer. Once they have landed they run for cover, as the helicopter's fuel line sparks and then explodes. No one is seriously injured, but Conan gets a few cuts and bruises. However due to the Atropine Eye Drops, Tsuji cannot participate in the upcoming golfing event, as the effects of atropine last up to 2 weeks.

From Conan's thinking, they realize that perhaps Kogoro's friends are not the only targets, but also people who know him. They visit an old friend of Kogoro who attended a culinary arts school for 8 eight years called Kouhei Sawaki. Santos mentions he is a wine connoisseur himself and asked to see his collection of wine. Conan walking back to his seat notices nicks on his floor (this fact will become important later on) and Kouhei explains that he dropped them. Santos goes on to mention a bottle called "Patronis" and Kouhei replies that he drank it because he was impatient.

Kogoro recently had a meeting with a famous Hotel Tycoon Katsuyoshi Asahi. He is opening his ninth and newest Hotel next month. The police, Kogoro, Megure, Conan, and Ran head to the hotel. There they meet up with several people who claim to have a meeting with Asashi. One of these people happens to be the wine taster who they met earlier in the story. The others are Nana Osanai (Model), Eimei Shishido (Photographer), Peter Ford (IB News), and Minoru Nishina (Food Expert). They all head into the hotel Inspector Megure explains the situation to them and Conan connects they're names and personal lives to their corresponding number. While speaking of their ties with Morano, Osanai presents a challenge to Minoru and criticizes his food suggestions book. Minoru takes a sip and guesses "Chambertin". He guesses the wrong answer and passes a glass to Kouhei who analyzed the drink by look, color, smell, and texture alone and guessed "Boujour Mila Nova" correctly. While alone they decide to take advantage of the opportunity and start preparing drinks for everyone. Conan goes to the kitchen and sees Kouhei tasting Chili Powder and having no reaction to it whatsoever. Peter Ford finds a letter addressed to Kouhei explaining his tardiness and invites everyone to the wine cellar.

They wait for the Hotel Tycoon for a long time until it becomes apparent that something is wrong. They decided to split up and search the hotel. The sommelier almost gets killed by a hidden trap in the wine cellar, but Conan saves his life. While searching the building they discover that they are trapped in the lower level of the hotel as the elevators are electronically sealed. Katsuyoshi Asahi shows up dead in the aquarium with the nine of spades card on his overcoat. They figure out that the lines are cut and the emergency exit has been sealed with dried cement The next victim is Osanai, the model, and she begins becomes distressed. Inspector Megure pressures her to talk about her encounter with the suspected murderer Morano. She explains that she had an accident where she caused a motorcyclist suspected to be Mirano to swerve out of control. She drove off in fear leaving the motorcyclist in anguish.

[edit] Ace of Spades

Shinichi shoots Ran...

While the rest of the people trapped decide to try and find a way out, she remains in the lobby with Conan and Ran. Then there is a power outage, and Osanai gets stabbed in the back. The killer however didn't notice Osanai putting a cork in the killers jacket. He found her from her glow-in-the-dark nail polish. While running away, the murderer knocks over a can of soda Conan was drinking. As the lights come on Conan sees who has the stain on their pants, but the camera never shows this. Conan figures out that the killer is right-handed from the mark on Osanai, yet he figures if Morano delt cards with his left, then the killer must be one of the people in the room. He also remembers putting a can of juice on the floor and heard it being knocked over, theorizing that whoever has the stain on his pants is the murderer. He figures out that Kouhei is the killer and asks why? Conan decides to experiment to find out the motive of the killer. He gives everyone mineral water except one which is mixed with salt, and they all compliment on its taste. Conan specifically asks Kouhei to compliment on it, saying it was good unsuspectingly giving in to Conans deduction.

Suddenly, the building explodes. It is obvious that whoever trapped them there intended for them all to die in the explosion. Instead, water from the ocean comes rushing in, almost drowning everyone. Ran gets trapped underwater, but Conan saves her using his super-stretching suspenders to lift the car on top of her. While Conan himself is trapped instead and almost runs out of oxygen, she gives him mouth-to-mouth resuscitation to save his life. Because of the explosion there is now a way for them to leave. They all decide to escape via the hole in the glass that leads out into the bay. Conan knows the killer is among them, and they must be careful.

Once they all get to land, Joseph Meguire's stitches start to bleed is in a lot of pain. A member of the group is knocked out and Kouhei decides to give him Mouth to mouth resuscitation. Conan puts Kogoro to sleep, then uses his voice-changing tie. He tells Inspector Santos to give him mouth to mouth instead. Conan then claims Kouhei Sawaki is the murderer. Kouheis' motive had nothing to do with Kogoro; instead, he is trying to take revenge on Osanai, who caused him to lose his ability to taste in a hit-and-run car accident; Asahi Katsuyoshi who broke their agreement on building a bar; Tsuji Hiroki the golfer who made fun of his wine-tasting profession, and Nishina Minoru the gourmet writer who insulted the wine-tasting profession by making so many mistakes in his books. The card sequence and other victims were merely a cover-up of his real motive. He also killed the shooter from 10 years ago and tried to pin the blame on him.

Conan explains that Kouhei lost his sense of taste and without it he would eventually be found out. He would feel cheated doing the thing he loves most. He decided to go back to his parents, but before that he needed to take revenge on those who wronged him and his profession. Kouhei agrees but he can't believe he was fooled by a simple trick of salt. But of course that's only circumstantial evidence. So he asks Mr. Kohei to check his pocket, and he finds Osanai's last message. A cork. Kouhei makes a run for it detonating his last bomb, with the sleepy Ran as hostage. Kogoro wakes up, and Conan, Santos, and Megure give chase. He leads them to the roof of the collapsing hotel. On the roof a helicopter has been called in, and hovers above. Santos is the only one with a gun, and is not good at aiming. Kogoro pleads with him to use the gun, but Santos says he cannot do that, Santos instead throws the gun to Kouhei, so he will save the hostage, but the gun doesn't make it all the way there. Conan runs and picks up the gun, after Kouhei tells him to do so. Instead of giving the gun to him, he shot and grazed her in the leg, making it very difficult for him to use the hostage (which is exactly what happened when Kogoro grazed Eri in the shooting 10 years ago to save her life). He drops Ran, and he and Santos run and tackle him. Then the building starts to collapse, and Kouhei almost falls off, but they save him. The helicopter lands and takes them all to safety. Kouhei is arrested for his crimes.

[edit] The Gun Shot

When the criminal takes Ran as a hostage, he asks Conan to bring the gun on the floor to the criminal. Conan suddenly shoots her leg instead. In that moment she realizes that when her father shot her mother's leg when she was taken hostage ten years prior, it was so that her mother would be free from the hands of the criminal. After all, an injured hostage is useless.

She had believed earlier that the reason her parents separated was because her father shot her mother when she was taken as a hostage. In the ending credits she asked her mother whether she knows the reason for the shooting. Her mother replies that she knows indeed. She tells Ran and Conan the real reason they separated: Eri cooked for him while recovering from the gun wound; He tells her that her cooking is gourmet for rabid dogs and she should throw it in the alley instead. They then fought and separated. Both Conan and Ran think that Eri's cooking is awful.

[edit] Trivia

The name of the movie comes from the fact that the last target became Ran instead of Shinichi, making her the fourteenth person to be targeted by Kevin.

The Fortune: At the beginning before the Detective Boys go to the "Tohto Aviation Memorial Museum" Amy entered her birthday and her fortune led to the letter c (keep in mind Shinichi's alias, Conan, start with the letter c.

[edit] English adaption

FUNimation's English dub of The Fourteenth Target was released on November 20, 2007. Due to the Americanization of the majority of the character's names, most of explanations for names have been changed.
